Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra Lays the Foundation For Growth

Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra (NPO) has been steadily building over the past 20 years, and began 2026 with a strong Executive Director, a deeply engaged and dedicated Board, and a full roster of incredible volunteer musicians. The organization felt ready to begin intentionally growing their scope of programming and engaged Elevate to facilitate a three-year strategic plan to get them there.

Development of Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan

Our approach

Elevate’s approach to strategic planning focuses on bringing in credible, relevant data on the internal and external landscape and engaging staff and board members in collaborative work to understand where the organization is, where it is trying to go, and how to get there. Elevate’s role is to facilitate the process, synthesize, and ensure alignment, while the staff and board are the experts who shape the actual content of the plan.

For NPO, the landscape scan consisted of a survey of orchestra members and external stakeholders to hear how folks understand the role of NPO in the Nashville ecosystem, its strengths and weaknesses, and input on what the right next steps are for the organization. There was an incredibly strong consensus on NPO’s role as the premier community orchestra in Nashville, as well as around the opportunity to grow programming. Elevate facilitated a daylong retreat with the full board and staff to process the findings, explore and clarify the organization’s mission and values, generate a draft strategic framework with clear goal statements to anchor the organization over the next three years, and specific strategies to work towards those goals. Folks left the retreat feeling aligned and excited for the work ahead. We then worked with the Executive Director and Board Chair to refine and finalize the draft, including progress indicators, and to support implementation planning.

The final strategic plan reflects and integrates the feedback from the musicians, board, and external stakeholders, and provides clarity for prioritizing work over the next three years. NPO has posted the final version on their website, here.

It was truly a joyful and meaningful experience to work with Jessica Gibbons from Elevate! From the start, the process was very clear and intentional, and was customized for our needs as well as our budget. Jessica had a plan and guided us through it, but she was also flexible as we worked through the steps and discovered where we could shift some of our focus during this process. I deeply appreciated the level of transparency and communication from Jessica (which was clearly part of their core value of relationships+collaboration). I have already recommended Elevate to at least two other arts nonprofit leaders!

It was so much fun to work with the folks at NPO - the whole group was locked in with me throughout the retreat and jumped right in to grapple with big questions about future direction. It was so clear that every member of the board is personally invested in the mission of NPO to make amazing orchestral performances freely available to as many people as possible. Their passion is contagious, and now that they have a framework that feels aligned to them, I am sure they will go farther than they ever anticipated.
